WIP Wednesday - Herringbone

I've finally finished the top for the herringbone (which I've been mistakenly calling chevron) quilt.

This quilt top was made from several charm packs of Moda Into the Woods and Bella Solids White Bleached turned into HSTs. It measures 18 by 22 squares and I'll have to get an assistant to hold it up when finished for some better photos as it's rather difficult to lay out in my small apartment.

Finishing this quilt is my April goal for ALYoF; I'm hoping to have it basted this weekend.

I'm planning to quilt a quarter inch straight line grid around all the squares in this mint green thread, then outline a chevron across every few rows in the red to add some detail and make the design pop. (I suspect I'm going to need more thread!) The red polka dots will be the binding.

I can't wait to get this finished off and finally gifted to my friend! It's a very late birthday present indeed as her birthday was about three months ago.

Last weekend I showed some of my comics and illustration work at a convention in Manhattan called MoCCAfest; I had a great experience selling my work and meeting other artists. I had some short comics with me and also an art book I did last year about NYC street fashion.

I shared a table space with the friend the herringbone quilt is for and two lovely girls visiting from New Zealand, one of whom had never been to the US before; we had met them through the comics community on twitter and offered them table space when their previous arrangement fell through. They're staying in the US for a few weeks so we are making a lot of fun plans to show them around.

I also made a short doodle comic about my cat including some scenes that fellow quilters may find very familiar:

  1. I'd love to see how the quilting turns out with that wonderful color thread! The cartoons of your cat are funny. My dogs like to get under the sewing table and stand with their foot on the foot pedal! They often do this when I'm not paying attention to them, so the machine starts going full tilt (WHOOSH!) and I jump and peer under the table to see them staring at me. If I had to caption what they're thinking, it would be "It's time for dinner."

    1. I ended up only using the green, but it looked lovely! I kept it very simple to just a grid so that I could use some color without distracting from the herringbone pattern too much. I will definitely find something to use that red in, though!

That's so funny about your dogs! My cat mostly likes to bat at everything. When I baste on the table she crawls under it and thwacks the quilt every time I move it.

  2. I'm visiting from Let's Bee Social! Love your herringbone quilt! You just reminded me that I have a herringbone quilt top that I need to quilt, too. Good luck getting yours all finished up and I hope to see the finished product!

    1. Hi Jen! I just checked out your blog, I love your rainbow maple leaf quilt.

I finally (!!!) finished up the herringbone quilt so I'm posting it up now actually! It feels like it took forever but I think I just underestimated how big it had become.

  4. Calico's love sewing. One of mine grabbed something small I was making while I was away from my machine and not only unraveled several yards of thread she also wrapped herself in it.

    1. Thank you! It's fantastic how many different things you can do with simple half square triangles just by playing with the layout.

  6. Beautiful quilt. And the red dot fabric is perfect for the binding. It will be so lovely when you have finished quilting it. Thanks so much for sharing your story about the MoCCAfest - very intesting. And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your drawings - so graceful - flow-freeing. And of course the cat cartoon - yep! hahaha

    1. I just finished it up and I am so glad I went with the red dot for binding, it really makes the quilt. Glad you enjoyed the cartoons! The cat spent the entire time I was hand binding in an intense game of "the needle is my prey."

  9. Oooh, I just love that top! Beautiful work, Eileen. :-) Uh, the cat comic? Bella. Not so much on the leather loveseat (touch wood) but oh yeah on the sewing machine. I even captured a hilarious pic of her earlier this month, much like your drawing!

    1. Thank you! I've gotten so many photos of her peeking around the sewing machine, and of course she's convinced everything exists just to be a toy for her.

Bella has the sweetest face, I always love seeing your photos of her.
